What he was actually doing .. as the boys showed me .. was beating the stalks and roots of groundnut plants with alternate strokes, to loosen the groundnuts from them. |

The sticks had hooked ends .. which, assisted by the boys using their feet, where useful to lift and turn the stalks to find more groundnuts and to put the 'waste' onto the heap at
the side. The 'waste' was of course not wasted and would be used later as food for the animals. |
